With the open market system, democracy is being accepted by many countries. The field of Media is directly related with democracy. Democracy of a country is fulfilled with the unison of Procedural Democracy and Associational Democracy.
Mr. Charitha Herath, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information says that Media acts as a link in between.
He said this addressing the one-day workshop on “The Role of Media and Patriotism” conducted at the Department of Government Information to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day. Which falls on today (3rd)
There is an imperishable relationship between Media and Democracy. Patriotism should go in parallel with Democracy. Freeing form the shackles of colonialism, we are at the challenge of building up a country for everyone. Media has a responsibility to build up a dialogue, which cannot be neglected.
Common regulation is required field of Media. We accept the need for regulation for common existence and its forward march .He further stated that the Ministry of Mass Media and Information is a partner in facilitating Media Prof. Ariyarathna Athugala, Director General of Information expressing views stated that World Press Freedom Day is Significant in the search for a powerful strategy in relation to Media.
Press freedom is addressed in different perspectives. Media at present in Sri Lanka nearly sensationalize the human mind. Human interests have earned a significant place in Media. Illusion or misconception is evident in news. Director General further added that in the circumstances the future citizen may be a robot as well as a patient.
