“With the dawn of Peace in this country, the journalists, artistes and writers have been able to perform their duties more freely. Therefore, they could direct any question to any person and write articles without fearing for their lives, produce dramas and films as well as discuss social issues. Not only the journalists and the artistes but the whole country has been relived from the fear for death, which has hunted in the past. I understand that this alone would not fulfill your expectations for peace. As enunciated in “Mahinda Chinthana” , “The freedom of the media could be truly established only if the living conditions of the media personnel are raised” Otherwise the journalists would be dependent on others.
As we are aware, Media of this country has always performed with responsibility. Foreign delegates sometimes say that media in our country pays more attention to incidents with less importance rather than development news. We would like to draw your attention to this fact. It is my pleasure to meet you all today as well as to present you laptop computers. You must be aware of this country as well as the world. You must reach information faster than the others. It is your duty and responsibility to disseminate information of importance to this country.”
H.E the President stated this addressing the inauguration ceremony of the distribution of laptop computers and vehicle loan facilities for journalists and artistes at the Temple Trees on 03rd November.
H.E. the President expressed his pleasure in realization of a “Mahinda Chinthana” proposal with Budgetary Provisions-2012 and further emphasized that the Government is aiming at fulfilling beyond the promises made to artistes and writes.
