A preliminary discussion regarding the formulation of a National Media Rating has been held today in the Ministry Auditorium under the patronage of Charitha Herath, Secretary, Ministry of Mass Media and Information with the objective of upgrading the quality of the content presented by electronic and print Media institutions in this country and socializing accurate Media ratings in relation to viewer responses.
An MoU has been signed in this regard between the Ministry of Mass Media and Information and the Communication and Research Unit of the University of Kelaniya. A group of representatives led by Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa of the Department of Mass Communication had been present in this discussion. Even though Media ratings have been publicized by various private institutions, criticisms were raised against their credibility and shortcomings have been observed. Therefore, it is expected to publicize credible Media ratings as well as to avoid the existing shortcomings with regard to them.
